I'm a PhD student in Jonathan Lynch's lab. My main focus on resource acquisition and allocation by plants. A plants life strategy can be characterized by choices between multiple trade offs for resource acquisition and allocation. For example, shallow rooting may increase phosphorus availability, however, also may increase root competition or decrease water availability. An other example would be the trade off between root diameter and root length. Both larger diameter and increased length may be considered positive for the acquisition of resources, but are also an expense.
Although economic theorem may help to understand the investment and return of a single root trade, resource management in plants is more complex since the lack of a single currency requires the plant to balance multiple resources. The complexity of nutrient homeostasis may however be studied with the aid of dynamic simulation models.
I have developed a new, scalable, version of SimRoot. For the purpose I programmed a dynamic simulation engine that, through plugins, can simulate an infinite number of small simulation models (as hardware permits). Each model, presenting the dynamic simulation of either a position or a variable, can communicate with other models. All models are registered in a hierarchical database.
